label for autocomplete widget doesn't translate (when switching to select the label does get translated)

That's probably because of core's #1157426: Field system uses t() incorrectly and inconsistently.
This is now fixed in recent core releases, field labels are *never* translated natively. Translation of field properties is handled by the i18n_field module in http://drupal.org/project/i18n
