Goals

2xOrgs that are makers

3xStrategic contributions

The Drupal Innovation initiative is metrics driven, tracking the health of contribution in the Drupal community and measuring key indicators to see the impact of our work.

For 2025 The Drupal Association wants to double the number of organisations that are "makers".

We want to triple the contributions to Drupal strategic product innovation.

This is part of Drupal Association Strategic goals 2023, 2025, which you can read here. You can follow as well the latest on the Drupal Innovation Blog.

Measuring innovation

Contribution Health Dashboards

As part of the feedback from the Innovation Working Group Alex Moreno developed a series of queries and Drush scripts with the goal of getting a better understanding of the contribution ecosystem in Drupal, understand what needs changing and how any changes introduced in the ecosystem would be working (or not).

Featured Initiative

Pitchburgh

At DrupalCon Pittsburgh 2023, we kicked off the Drupal Innovation initiative with a contest. People across the community were invited to submit short video pitches for tightly scoped, impactful projects, and the Drupal Association together we key partners created a pool of seed funding for this work. Together, DrupalCon attendees voted on the proposed initiatives, and the top selections were funded.

Increasing number of contributions

User onboarding improvements

The first contact a bit portion of our users have with Drupal is our drupal.org registration. Improving that process not only ensures that we are delivering the image and branding that Drupal deserves, but also we maximise the opportunities to convert those users from takers to makers,

[COMING SOON]

We estimate 130,000 hours spent on contribution by our community each year. Imagine if by reducing contribution friction we can save 10% of that time. That would be 13,000 hours saved that can be reinvested in innovation.

Contribution blockers

Identify and address friction points in the contribution process

If something hurts innovation is an issue open for months or years. The long tail of the (Open Source) contribution pipe give us the opportunity to decrease that time to contribution, increase velocity in the Open Source project and speed up how Drupal is developed

Bounty program

Reward innovation

The Bounty program was a pilot program with the idea to solve a few common problems, the most important one, direct contributions where Drupal and the Drupal Association needs them more, which is, for example, to strategic initiatives and innovation projects.

The program was successful, it solve issues that were stuck for years, and it demonstrated the need of a soft steering on the right direction
