Problem/Motivation

I cannot have big pipe enabled and adv_varnish at the same time. Do they serve a similar function and just a different implementation.

BigPipe and Varnish are bit different. You can learn more about it herr: https://docs.acquia.com/cloud-platform/performance/bigpipe/

Maybe we can think of support for BigPipe here. But right now it's impossible. What to choose depends on your site and type of content that you have there.
