Module development and code questions

Hi,

I upgraded to the new Activities modules, and I've been having serious problems ever since ( after editing a page/or changing a setting, and I hit send afterwards, I get a blank screen). Are there known issues with the new release, or is the problem from my end (which I doubt).

Secondly, when activities are displayed in the right sidebar, they have comment boxes (which I don't like). I need to have them disabled.

I am using drupal6 and I want to change my theme page into three sections:
1) Left panel (left block.. perhaps)
2) Center Panel (center block.. perhaps)
3) Right Panel (right block.. perhaps)

does system settings variables are stored in a DB table?
what is the name of that table?
and except variable_set and variable_get is there any other way to access them?
