I need to hire somebody to develop a drupal site for me. I asked them to give me their sites done with drupal. How do I know the site is developed by using Drupal?

I am currently running a site on drupal 4.6.x
I was thinking of moving to 6.1
Now, I understand the upgrade path is
4.6-4.7-5.x-6.1 etc., etc.,

But in our case we only want to preserve the content.
Themes/modules/skins blah blah and even comments are not important.
We have various books/topics/blogs etc., and would like the same to be there on the new installation too.
Any good idea on how to do it? Where to start

Is there anything other than the cumbersome upgrade path?

I am in a serious problem status. Currently I am webmaster for a non-profit organization providiing help and information for disabled Ontarians. There is no budget with this group and is formed from volunteers. I had set up the site a few years ago as an HML site an a year ago it was updated to a Drupal site by some college students pro-bono.

We are currently experiencing a situation where we cannot do any modifications to the site. We can login but are denied from accessing any changes.

I'm upgrading a legacy site but it's more or less going to be a fresh build. It is going to be completely re themed. What I'm interested in is preserving the database. Can I simply run the update script in 5.7 on 4.6 database? I can't find any info about this before I start experimenting.

I'm very new to the web development world and not sure if I am addressing this question in the right discussion group. Excuse my obtuse netiquette.

I am hoping to use an open source web CMS solution (preferably Drupal of course) as the basis of my company's Extranet. It is a large listed company in South Africa. Apart from the core Drupal modules, I would like to use documentation storage and upload functionality, user management and level security, basic news / rss / email and announcement functionality and other enterprise CMS solutions.
