Stop Forum Topics Being Promoted to Front Page?

Is that possible and if so, where can I set this?

I keep getting one line forum posts being automatically promoted to the front page and would rather they were not...

Many thx

new guy: confusing for users? advise for afficianado site

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm wondering about using this for a non-geek afficianado type site, and have no idea about this type of system. Coming from only using forums, at first glance the system seems overwhelming for the user/visitor, I think. Do you find that?

Also, what do you see as the advantage of posting news items with comments over simply posting in a forum? Seems confusing to have stories with comments AND a forum when most news items could simply be forum posts. I guess you can categorize news stories, but other than that, what advantages? For non-geeks, I think moderated comments would not work well, but maybe I'm wrong. How do you find that the news feature best works?

On top of that you have blogs (with comments?) which makes it even more confusing for the user - at least was for me when checking a few sites out. I got the feeling there was just too much info splayed all over: news items with comments; blog items with comments, and regular forums. -All of which could have just been items in a forum.

How do you feel the blogs can best be integrated in my case? A few feature writers only? But then why don't they just post one or the other: news articles or blog entries?

What I would need for my site, I think, would be a collaborative database of tips and tutorials along with forums and the news aggregator. Maybe a few feature writers (posting news or blogs?). Can anyone offer some experience in this field, or point me to some sites that might help me think about this type of setup?

Restrict Taxonomy

How can I limit certain users to certain Taxonomy terms?

I have different users which will update different parts of the site.

Blogware Choice: WordPress (drupal not included) Pretty GUI, Free, Support

Some might find this asymptomatic.net blog from Owen interesting. With all of the attention that Movable Type has been getting the last few weeks, I'm finding what seems like a great number of pleased WordPress users... Personally, I like the power of Drupal... but it's great to hear what others are saying in this space. Marc C. makes a few notes on this as well.

Some bits from Owen's blog below:
The chart: http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm

"Responses on the WordPress forum were pretty good. Their user forum is the most active, intelligent bunch of folks in the blogging world, hands-down...

I also did not include generic CMS software; only blog-making software. This excludes software like Drupal and phpNuke. I’m sure you can make a great blog with this software, but there are two things that I found in common the these packages: Either they were too configurable (Drupal, Typo3), or they looked like one of those h4x0r community sites. C’mon, you know what I’m talking about - phpNuke on phpBB. They’re fine for keeping a weblog, more community and file-service oriented.

Here are a few things that I would like WordPress to do that aren't as simple as the default install:
