I am using a taxonomy vocabulary for editorial access control, my setup uses Access control fields.
I have installed Simple Hierarchical Select module for my taxonomy vocabulary, but if the widget in the content type manage fields form, is set to use this module, then workbench access does not work as expected.
(it let's the user select from all taxonomy terms).

If the widget is set to select list, then I get the expected and correct functionality...
but my taxonomy vocabulary is big and I would like to use simple hierarchical select, it is very user friendly actually...

Try implementing hook_hierarchical_select_valid_item($item, $params) to check the validity of the term id.

$item here is a taxonomy term_id. If that id is not in the user's sections, return FALSE. Else return TRUE.

I would actually put that hook in the main module, and try to be sensitive to the access type.
