I think I have most everything figured out, except ...
When I open the WebCalendar, I get

You must reconfigure your php.ini file to have magic_quotes_gpc set to ON.

But in my root/etc directory, php.ini does indeed have magic_quotes_gpc set to ON.

I have WebCalendar 1.0.5 (there is a 1.2.b1, but I saw no 1.1.x on the Sourceforge site)
and Webcal 5.x.6.0

I listed the wrong version of Webcal in the body of the message (the header info is correct). Then when I tried to fix it, I accidentally entered a whole new almost-duplicate entry. This one can be ignored in favor of the other one, with the right info.

I changed the code in the php.ini file and it made no changes. Does the coding have to be also changed in the config.php file? I noticed that there is also code in there for magic quotes as well.

I ended up abandoning Webcal in favor of Events, which does everything I need, including an acceptable calendar interface.
