Hi, could you please clarify differences from the Embed Widgets project? Why should users use this and not the other module? Thanks!

aron novakFirst, this module has a much smaller footprint (13.5KB instead of 33KB) and it supports more embedding formats.
It has no hard dependency at all (altough views is highly recommended). Embed Widgets 6.x-1.0 requires the following modules: Tabs and Color Scheme API
I'd say it's lightweight and powerful, especially if you'd like to embed views.
Of course it has less features, no tab support, no configurable color scheme, you can only use it with views with the help of the user interface.

jtsnow commentedPerhaps this will offer some more detail:
The upcoming Embed Widgets 6.x-2.0 (currently in alpha) will offer the following:
- No dependencies on any other modules.
- Embed nodes, blocks, views, or custom content via API.
- Widget content is themeable via templates (much like Views offers templates suggestions)
- Ability for forms and links to stay in widget
Congrats on the release of Web Widgets!

alex_b commentedWe should document the differences in characteristics and features between embed widgets and web widgets.
Ideally, we can add a short explanation to the project landing pages and a more in depth comparison in README files.

EvanDonovan commentedAny work done on documenting Web Widgets since July 7?

EvanDonovan commentedLooks like the 2.x version of Embed Widgets doesn't have any dependencies. I think it may have some other significant changes to make it more lightweight. I think the main difference remaining is that this module plugs in to Views, whereas Web Widgets is standalone.
In any case, since documenting differences would be a moving target, I think that creating a page on Groups.Drupal.org & referencing it in the README would be the best way to do this.
alex_b commentedWeb widgets integrates with Views but it can be used without it too.
To kick this off, do you want to provide a comparison write up and post it here?
EvanDonovan commentedalex_b: Yeah, I will do this soon. Still testing the modules myself.
OneTwoTait commentedI would still be interested in seeing a concise comparison of these two modules.
It looks like Embed Widgets 2.0 has been in Alpha since 2009! Perhaps there's not much going on for development with it. I would be scared to use an Alpha version on a live site.
EvanDonovan commentedJust as a note, I tested the two modules and wasn't happy with the approach of either for my needs. I created a site-specific module which is in a sandbox here: http://drupal.org/sandbox/evandonovan/1106390.
As for Embed Widgets, it looks like there hasn't been a commit in a year. I think this project has become the defacto solution since it is still getting commits.
clemens.tolboomThe Embed widgets project has no more activity since 2 years.
@EvanDonovan: maybe you can translate your unhappiness into feature requests :-)
I close this issue for now. Feel free to reopen or write up a summary on our documentation page http://drupal.org/node/1835276 :p
