This is not a patch but just a simple observation that anything that virtual site is trying to overwrite and that also gets overwritten by i18n (frontpage, site name, etc) will not work by default. This is because of i18n's module weight.
In order to fix this go to the system table and change the weight of the the virtual_site module to something > 10

Now it is a patch as I realised that i18n stores overwritten variables (like the site_frontpage). The attached patch fixes the issue by disabling the caching feature of i18n.

Disabling caching could be a big performance problem, so I don't think we can commit that fix as is.

It seems that other users do have i18n working - so presumably there must be something specific to your site. We would need more info to reproduce. As this issue is very old, presumably it is no longer relevant to the raiser. Please re-open if desired.
