The project page for Views Carousel says "The drupal 6 1.x and 2.x branches are both considered stable and are in use on numerous production sites. The are just yet to be released."

If the -dev version has been stable for so long (latest -dev is from 2009-Nov-06), why not release a stable version?

I have customers who prefer to only have modules with stable releases as a rule. And stable releases are more friendly to those new to Drupal.

There's been a D6 version for a while now. See also #983844: Deprecate this module now that jCarousel includes it
