Contextual Filter using URL Parameter option?

I am trying to use a contextual filter, using the URL Parameter option:

URL Parameter. | JSON | Replacement for placeholder in URL.

There is an example view for using the "Apath Replacement." but I cannot figure how URL Parameter will work?
