It would be great if exposed filter fields could be allowed to be next to one another, as is the normal behavior in Views.

With Views, you get
[] [] [] [] []

With Views Exposed Groups, you get
[]
[]
[]
[]
[]

This takes up a lot more vertical space.

That's a tough one, for a lot of projects we prefer the non-floated version of the form. You can actually alter this at the theme layer with some CSS, so I'm not sure it would make sense to implement this as an option on the form.
