Is it possible to remove an attach view out of $content and add it in node.tpl.php, like with cck. In cck you can use $field_fieldname_rendered to render that field anywhere in the node template file.

If you want a view just in the template, then you don't want to use views_attach. You want to use Component module (or just the single views API call that it uses) and grab the view in a preprocess function and stick that into a variable to show in the template.
