Summary: once I turn on "Use grouping", creating or changing a filter (like Node:Type) displays the "Configure group settings for filter" box, forcing me to pick an aggregation function for the filter.

The field I'm filtering on is not otherwise part of the SELECT or GROUP BY clauses, so I expected it would not have to be aggregated.

Repro steps:

Create new view of type Node,
add fields Node:Nid and User:Name
set Use grouping: to Yes
click Nid field's gear, set function to COUNT
click to add filter on Node:Type

RESULT: Group type: selection widget is displayed

EXPECTED: no forced grouping, be prompted to select Node Type to filter on instead

I *can* turn off grouping, add a filter, turn grouping back on, and get the desired result. That's a fairly painful user experience, though, especially for less technical users.

Click on submit will display the normal config form, right?

Title: Cannot edit filters with grouping turned on » Editing filters with grouping turned on prompts for aggregation on filter field

Yes, click on submit will display the normal config form.

Still seems like a bug, right, if the filter field is not one of the ones in the SELECT clause?

Editing title to remove the "cannot edit".

This should be perhaps tackled on the new views 3.x ui improvements.

I'm marking this as an unassigned task. If anyone would like to role up their sleeves and take it upon themselves to write a patch it would be awesome
