So I am trying to implement a calendar using Calendar, Views, and Date. It's working fine thus far, but I want to style the Events based on a department name, so I can have red, green, blue, etc. links on my calendar for each dept.

I have the following fields on my view:
Content: Department
Node: Title
Content: Date - From date

Content: Department is just a text field and that's working fine by itself - users get a drop down of options and they select a department. It shows properly in the event entries.

All I should need to do is edit:
Node: Title field
Output this field as a link
populate Link Class with [field_dept_value]

And now the links should have a dynamically assigned class=[field_dept_value]

The problem is that's *literally* what is happening. [field_dept_value] is not being evaluated, and I get this in my final page:

Day of the Dead...

Any suggestions? *very* much appreciated.

I just rewrote the Title field to look like this: 

<div class="calendar-event-title [field_dept_value]">
[title]
</div>

And checked "Link this field to its node". Now I have class declarations that I can style my events by. Notice this is used to color code the events by department at the site above.
