((I tried to send this directly to merlinofchaos, but he doesn't, so I'm here . . . ))
I'm new to drupal, but not to PHP & MySQL.
I'm trying to build a view that has relations too complicated for the Views module.
I see that Export View gives a "$view", but I have not been able to find the documentation on it. Neither drupal's search nor Google do dollar signs . . .
So my first question is, where is $view documented?
There's also fragmentary documentation on coding something to feed into drupal via PHP, but I haven't found where its central documentation is, either. It's not even clear if the PHP coding to create a complex view is a module or something else.
Again, I'm asking only for links. They're not easy to find for drupal.
Thank you!

merlinofchaos commentedThe major documentation links are available on the views project page. If it's not on the API site or the advanced help, it's not documented.
The $view object is not intended to be built by hand, and so there is no documentation for doing so. The $view object is more or less documented on the API site, which as I said, is linked from the project page.

Neil_in_Chicago commentedOK, most of the documentation is somewhere, with twisty trails of clues from one point to another.
In case it does someone else some good trying to look things up later:
Views does say “Views 2 (This documentation comes with Views 2 if you also install the advanced help module, but this version is provided for your convenience. This site may or may not be fully up to date at any given time.)” Those two leads give the same information in different versions.
Then there's Views Documentation. Except the page I need, Views 2 module developer API has the disheartening notation "[TODO] almost everything". But it does give a good starting point, another parallel to the previous two.
And over in groups is a recent node_example.views.inc.
I haven't gone deeply enough into the Views Schema module to see if it's useful to me.

Neil_in_Chicago commentedThanks for the netiquette.
I'm still kind of low on the learning curve of The Drupal Way.
