What kind of handler should I write

I have 2 custom entities - one representing a property and another representing a booking. I would like to add a field to my custom view representing a state (booked/available) of the property on a given date.

I understand that I need to do some joins on the DB tables in order to figure out the state but this is not the problem...

I am able to write a filter handler but then I have to expose both date and state options and as a result I am only able to see filtered records with either of the states.

Which kind of handler should I write to be able to select only date from the exposed filters form and based on that selection render all records with custom field representing the state? Is it possible to expose date selection from within the field handler or do I need to use a combination of handlers?
