I have a bunch of nodes which share a common textfield (or even integer.)

I am trying to create a view which takes the current node as an argument and the view returns all nodes whose
textfield / integer field value is equal to the current nodes textfield / integer field value.

It seems that you can only really create relationships on taxonomy and and file fields on Node Views?

Is there a possible workaround or do I need to do this by hand through code in the template file?
