Maximum number of Variables Drupal site can support?

In Drupal we store all variables in 'variable' table. We are planning to have all text configuration to store in variable which is easy to achieve multilingual support also. So I want to know to what extend we can define variables i.e ~5000/~10000. What will be the impact on performance.
