Possibly have tokens that take arguments or parameters?
[ssp|path=%] which is passed to the display function. Unless this has already been done and I just missed it

Yeah - this is basically planned out in http://groups.drupal.org/node/5744 (I know it's old...it's still a plan).

It is "token 2.0" and just needs someone to do it and then benchmark it.

As Token in D6 has been stable for quite a while, and it doesn't really make sense to start on a Token 2.0 when we have tokens in D7 core, I'm going to mark this as won't fix.
