I have copied the css and tpl files from textsize_template-1.8 textsize_attheshow into my theme folder.

The icons show up and also clicking on them works as expected. But they are very small. Looking at the CSS it seems that the textsize.css in my theme folder doesn't get included.

My theme uses Zen as a base theme.

Do I need to put the css into my theme's .info file?

Yes, please read the help page "admin/help/textsize".

Add this code in your THEMENAME.info file:
stylesheets[all][] = textsize.css
