Given that a taxonomy reference is really just a specifically flavoured entity reference and has been for many years now, I am interested to understand the true raison d'être for this module over the Entity Reference Tree Widget module.

The module page description seems to suggest quite strongly that we can use this for front-end Taxonomy filtering but conversely, the use of the term Widget might over Display formatter suggest otherwise.

No doubt I'm missing some obvious (I often seem to) but I just thought I'd throw it out there for comment before I start experimenting.
