Is there currently a way or suggested way to set TRAC to be the default taxonomy relations widget that's used to select a term's parent term(s)? grazie.

There are no silver bullet ways to do this as every field type (not widget) defines its default formatter and widget to use.

The only option might be to leverage hook_field_info_alter to override the default widget in the field definition, but this wouldn't do you any good for exported fields or fields that already exist, only on fields created after the hook is introduced into the site.
