This would be a very useful module for a D8 site that I maintain - I'll make a start on developing a D8 version, and track progress here.

The basic proof of concept is working, although it currently only handles a single reference field, and only on nodes.

Bobík has made me a maintainer, and the 8.x-1.x branch is now on drupal.org.

Still need to make the module more generic
