I am not sure exactly how to reproduce this bug (even though I submitted it ;). I think this is a situation when something "wonky" happens in the db. Like when a comms node is marked as submitted, but the groups it has been submitted to have been removed, or if by some chance the og module is not installed. Regardless, I have provided defaults for the variables used in node-comms.tpl.php that should prevent this from happening.

Checked into the development branch. I am going to mark this as needs review for now.
