If i want to display menu as table + table-cell (ul: table, li: table-cell), then i have problem with nested level ULs, because of known behavior of table-cell display with relative position CSS rules (in mozilla at least). To solve this problem I need to insert wrappers around LI content.

there is an option "Wrapper around main UL content". But it works only for main UL, so nested ULs do not have this wrapper. Of course, I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the LI-content wrapper is better suited for this task

Same for me, the "display:table-cell;" is for my project the best solution, but Firefox has the same issue since 10 years with them and "position:relative;". The common solution is to wrap the <ul> in the <li> content with a div.position;relative.
It would be great to have more choice (generic choice) on the elements to wrap.

Temporaly, I str_replace <ul> in a hook, but I just saw in the JS, that the selectors for ULs is ">ul", so if we wrap ULs in span inside LIs, menus will not work.
I understand now why it's limited in thes HTML wrappers.

Perhaps it would be great to use 'ul').first instead... I don't know
