Am I missing something? If someone makes a comment, seems to me that they should be subscribed automatically to subsequent comments on the topic....or that that option should exist somewhere.

As far as I can tell, auto subscribe just subscribes the author of a node to comments on that node.

Thanks for the module! It is extremely helpful, but I need to figure out this comment piece....

2.0 has three different auto-subscribe options.
