Thanks to Moshe, I just found out that there is another rewrite of the old subscriptions module that was recently released, the notifications module. It has exactly the same philosophy as the new subscriptions module. I don't think it is a good idea to have two modules so close to each other? Could they be fused? I have made a similar request in the notifications module queue at http://drupal.org/node/214578

Jose tried to introduce this first in the subscriptions queue but in my view that's byzantine complex and will be viable only as long as someone pays his time to maintain it.
