When I click on a link in the "Subscribe" fieldset I am taken to an "Add subscription" page. I that shows the "Send interval" drop-down menu. Irrespective to what value I had set the send interval to for this subscription, that drop-down always shows the default setting.

Yes, you're right, I could default it to the current value if there already is a subscription. OTOH, the default has its purpose, too, and I'm not sure which one to give preference. IAC, I don't want to add a long story like "you already have ... do you really want to ... etc." I don't really expect anyone to click on the link if the subscription is already active...

The underlying problem is that I'm not sure where to put those links. They don't have a good purpose in the node form, but I have a hard time to find a better way to expose them. Any ideas?

I don't think you need to expose those links, you can leave that to site designers who want to use them.

I think it would be natural if that page showed exactly the same controls with the same defaults as the subscription fieldset.

I moved the links to README.txt.

I think I'll keep the Send Interval control at the default value. Haven't worked on the visibility yet, but that's http://drupal.org/node/211882.
