I am using the dev version but the content type for the mail template is showing the machine name, not the content type name.

I am putting !node_type into the mail template.

Please take a look - the dev module notes indicate that this has been fixed.

You're probably referring to

Use content type names rather than machine names for the template descriptions.

That has nothing to do with !node_type.
