I ran into a problem where redirecting didn't work properly when a character such as a + was part of the friendly URL. Not fully understanding why this works, I added the following to line subscriptions.module:1204:
$rtnloc = urldecode( $rtnloc);
This just decodes any amount of encoding that has been done. This then keeps the redirect from re-encoding already encoded values (such as a %20). This worked for me, so if this is helpful for anyone else, it's here.
