I want the user to see a link in their profile page which directly leads them to the categories page, not to the overview page, which would only confuse them and requires one more click.

This is the type of site-specific configuration that you need to do yourself.

I fixed this problem by...
- writing an url rewrite:
RewriteRule ^(de|en)/user/([0-9]+)/subscriptions$ $1/user/$2/subscriptions/taxa [N]
- hiding the sub-tabs for subscriptions by using the module tabtamer

This works pretty well, except as admin I also can't access the overview-page of a user. If I want to change something, I have to comment out the rewrite rule temporary.
