Currently subform elements are exposed as a '#button_type' wiht value 'submit'. I'd doesn't seem to be necessary for it to be the triggering_element.

Leaves us to the issue that form_builder() set the first button of the wrapper form to be the triggering_element. But an earlier subform might contain buttons too.

Title: Don't expose subform as a #button_type » IE ignores button inside subform being the first button on a form

I think it is save to set this issue to fixed. I noticed that the issue only exists for form containing only one input element. If a form contains a subform it is very unlikely the whole form will contain only one input element.
