A notice is thrown when creating new subfield fields:
Notice: Undefined index: subfields in subfields_field_instance_settings_form() (line 271 of xxxx/subfields.module).

The code is looking for a value that doesn't yet exist. I'm thinking we should hide any field components that aren't relevant to the given field type using JS. Patch to follow.
