after turning on the spam module, valid content began to be deleted automatically. i have not set any options that say they will delete content without human intervention.

The spam module will automatically purge content that is marked as spam after 2 weeks. You can adjust this setting in the advanced configuration section. If you never want spam content deleted, adjust the "Expire spam content" setting to "never".

thanks jeremy. i didn't have the spam module set to automatically purge any content. however, i have recently realized that it was the aggregator2 module that was doing the deleting. i had told it to delete feed content that was >1 year old. sorry for the confusion.
