Can you provide a link to the "the entity devel tab group" to go with the screen shot?

I'm a simple site builder, and I've looked everywhere I can think of, and nothing like that screen appears. Obviously a blocker for me, but I can't bear to mark a documentation issue as critical.

This seems like a module that will be very useful as I cope with the complexities of search_api. Thank you!

The devel tab is provided by the devel module. This module creates the secondary search api tab.

The devel tab should be on all entities.

You might be missing the devel tab because of missing permissions, but it's just a guess.

If you try the module (remember to include devel and search api) on simplytest.me it should be easy to test and find the tabs, on a clean installation with an administrator account.
