how does this work?

If I select Role ID as the view type to create, I only have 2 options for fields to return. views result counter and custom text.

Nothing is returning the roles even w/ the filter set correctly. Maybe I'm missing a view plugin or some other module?

divbox, this module provides a cck field that references roles. So, you must add a cck field of type 'role reference' to one of your content types via Admin > Content Types > (Select target content type here) > Add field.

Then, you can create a node type view, and you can select your role reference field as a view field.
