Thanks :) I agree that this functionality should be in core. It seems like security so far really has not been something the Drupal developers have seriously addressed, evidenced by the number of "bolt-on" security modules like cac, cac_lite, etc.
Agreed - many thanks - did just what I needed after I was surprised that it wasn't Drupal's default operation!
FWIW - I believe this is standard in 6.x.
