Is it possible to make this the default instead of upload being default? This way the only box that shows would be the remote file box.

If you just make this the only option under the "Sources" fieldset when editing the file field's settings then it will be the default.

As a workaround I use FileField source remote url and use the prepopulate module to fill it with the URL to the file.
