will it improve performance on any site by moving functions to the new table, or will that only happen for modules that are designed for this module?
(meaning, if one were to just download, install and enable, will it simply do nothing if nothing else requires it?)

crystaldawn commentedHeh, I wish I were that much of a genius ;) There wouldnt be any performance gain just by installing this module. It's only going to improve performance of modules that actually utilize this module as a dependency. There are only a couple so far but I suspect as more and more people notice this modules existance, we will see conversion to it increase. Maybe to the point of someday being a core replacement for the variables system.

zilla commentedah, that was the dream - i just install this random module and suddenly see a 10 times performance gain by just clicking 'activate' ;)
will you be tracking the modules that use this? have you got a current listing of any kind (for d6)?

crystaldawn commentedI've actually planned on doing that but I dont know how I will do it yet. I've been looking for a method in CVS to see if there are any dependency checks that I could utilize but I havent found any yet. The next idea I had if there wasnt an option for that currently, was to actually make the option myself in the form of a module. I have the ability to download all the .info files from the CVS (actually any anonymous user can do that) so I do have all the info needed to do such a thing so it is something I will be doing for sure. I havent decided on just how to do it yet. It will probably be a link on my own personal website that shows a list of what modules use my stuff, very similar to the one that I have on there already that tracks what websites use my phpGoogleStoreLocator app (currently a non-drupal app that I am making a drupal module for). It's been a huge success (the website tracking) because my site has a decent google rank and when I link to other websites, it in turn gives them a boost in SEO, especially if the users website is in the same field as my own (php development). So people dont mind that I track stuff like that with my non-drupal apps. Whether or not people in the drupal community like the idea I dont know yet but we will soon find out because I plan on tracking who installs what and posting the links on my site just like I did for phpGoogleStoreLocator. Its also reassuring to me that my work isnt going to waste. Its good to see that 500 websites have installed something I made. Not to mention when my own clients look at it, it assures them that I do know a thing or two about what I'm doing or else 1000s of people wouldnt be using my things hehe. So long story short, yes this is actually a feature I plan to implement, and soon. Maybe even today lol.
