I really like this module that uses javascript and JQuery to post a modal form and passes the data entered on that form back to my site's php code. I have used it for several years, but am uncertain as to its status.
There are 4 releases posted on the website, as follows: 7.x-1.0, 5 August, 2013; 7.x-1.1, 20 July, 2014; 7.x-2.x-dev, 20 July, 2014; 7.x-1.x-dev (.info file has this has 7.x-1.x+7-dev), 7 November, 2016. The first three of these have a popup_forms_link function, the last one has a popup_forms_build_link function.
Right now, I am using a version that no longer appears to be on the website, but which works. The .info file for the version I have shows it as 7.x-1.1+1-dev, and the post date is 5 April, 2015.
A note posted on 1 December 2014 on the module's site says "please use dev version, 7.x-1.x release was made by mistake. API of this module is unstable, it can and will change in the future. We will issue a stable release after we finalize the API." I cannot understand what this note means.
Four questions: 1) What is the "official" latest version of the module that I should be using? 2) What changes and/or improvements were made in the 2.x version (there are no release notes)? 3) Is there any intention to port this to Drupal 8?, and 4) Has this module been "superseded" (i.e., is there another module that provides the same functionality)?

anrkaid commentedHi.
Here are your answers
The official version is 7.x-1.x-dev . Other versions can also be usable, but all the changes are not documented (you have to investigate it by your own).
7.x-2.x release contains a lot of improvements, but they were not tested properly, thats why this release is not public.
These improvements are:
For now we have no clear plans to port this module. Probably, we will do this when we need it in one of our d8 projects.
I think, i this case we will use 7.x-2.x version as a base of a new module (in terms of functionality).
As far as i know - there is no direct replacement for this module. It has been designed to solve one particular task.
There are several modules, that you can use to build similar functionality - for example ctools or overlay modules, but you will have to handle all that FAPI stuff by yourself, if you chose them.

wdseelig commentedThank you very much for this comprehensive response.
For now, I'm going to continue to use the version that I have up: 7.x-1.1+1-dev. Later, when I have the time to check things out, I'll take a look at the 7.x-1.1+7-dev version ( the one with the popup_forms_build_link function) to see if I can get that working.
And, again, thank you for this module.
