This module has been specifically designed to provide Mozilla OBI compliant badge empowered learning system. The aim of this badging system is to provide a visual demonstration of achievement to enhance accomplishment in eyes of the student as well as college admission officers.

What are Open Badges?

Open Badges are digital images that can be used to recognize an individual's skills and achievements. In general, badges are achieved through the demonstration of learning, the application or attainment of skills or by taking part in certain activities. However, Open Badges are more than just digital images because behind each one is a rich body of metadata that describes the criteria for achieving the badge, what the individual did to meet that criteria, who awarded the badge, and when it was awarded. Open Badges can be displayed online in a badge backpack and then shared on websites, blogs and social networking sites such as LinkedIn.

Intel along-with, one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in the U.S., Society for Science & The Public (SSP), were seeking for a Digital Badge System. The aim of this badge system was to enable and reward independent research and encourage participation in science fairs for middle school and high school student researchers, teachers, mentors, judges, volunteers, and the community at-large.

“OpenBadges” module has 3 bundles which are as follows:

Badges - This defines a digital badge in a PNG image with OBI compliant meta data

Issuers - This defines a issuer who are going to issue the badges, this could be an individual or Organization

Awards - This defines a badge which is going to be awarded to the participant and winners on different levels of their achievement

"OpenBadges" module also declares the pages to manage these entities from admin/issuer level.

Manage Badges – This page provides a flexibility to an issuer for managing the badges added in the system

Manage Issuers – This page provides a flexibility to an issuer for managing the issuers added in the system

Manage Awards – This page provides a flexibility to an issuer for managing the awards added in the system

“OpenBadges” provides all the features of a Badging system. It allows badge management at creator/issuer level as well as badge management at earner/receiver level.

Badge management at creator/issuer level:

Issuer (admin) can create badges which will be a png image with a OBI compliant meta data.

Issuer (admin) can issue/revoke the badges to the user triggering a notification email to the users.

Badge management at earner/receiver level:

This module will allow receivers to manage their earned badges by:
-Maintaining their own backpack
-Pushing the badges to Mozilla backpack

Installation steps:

- Install as usual, see http://drupal.org/node/895232 for further information
- Enable all the modules and follow the read me file of each module

Note:

Right now the system comes with own backpack implementation that allows for badge assignments which are OBI compliant. We are in the process of separating backpack into a separate module. In this case, if you want to use Mozilla OpenBadges backpack (or any other backpack) you would be able to do that.
