I do not have purl installed. I see that the module does use purl attributes.

There're two concepts of "dynamic rules" within ThemeKey:

1. Triggered Themes. The ThemeKey User Profile module is an example (part of the ThemeKey download). A user can select his own theme for the site within his profile.

2. Modules can add, delete or modify rules using ThemeKey's API. The Mobile Tools module does so whenever you change something in it's configuration.

I'm convinced that the Organic groups theme module could be rewritten according to approach 1 and leave all the theme switching stuff to ThemeKey. I think this will turn Organic groups theme into a more robust module because it's implementation of hook_custom_theme() does not deal with any of the edge cases that are related to that hook.

I can give support for that, if someone likes to implement it.
