Had updated to to 1.7 and subsequently to 1.8 but the meta tags boxes are showing serialised data, please see attached screenshot.
What must be done to fix this issue. No database backup available.

That is a hangover from the corrupt v.17
If you don't have backup you have a problem.
The only was I sorted it out was to uninstall 1.7, re-install 1.5 and restore from backup.

Sadly, Chris is right. You need to restore to a backup of 1.0 or 1.3 or 1.5. Then you need to upgrade directly to 1.8, bypassing 1.7.

The issue of 6.x-1.7 corrupting data is being handled at #654206: Upgrade to 1.7 fails to complete on some installations, and corrupts data, so I'll mark this as a duplicate of that issue. See comment #15 there for how to restore the data and then upgrade safely.

Since I do not have a backup, restoring is not going to work.
I was wondering if someone has a small script that I can use to deserialise the data so that the data is converted to its proper format in the database.
Something akin to the script here:

I would rather keep this a separate issue since the other one is marked as fixed, whereas my problem isn't fixed and I'm looking for a solution.
