The Nodeblock module page reads "We advice you to use this module together with Node Level Blocks or Block Reference module."

Are those modules required in order for Nodeblock to work, or is it just that they provide really useful functionality? I'm upgrading from an early version of Nodeblock and I'd prefer not to add more modules if I don't have to.

Nodeblock works fine without NLB or Block Reference. You use those two modules to attach nodeblocks to nodes. You can also do this with context, core blocks module, panels, etc. It's just a bit of advice to provide you a very flexible module set up.
