In addition to the All users ( including anonymous ) grant I think there are many use cases where a grant solely for authenticated users would be useful.

Ok to solve this I used it in conjunction with the Access Control module.

I have Access Control enabled on the Content Type and it allows control down the node. Priority is 5.

I have an Entity Reference field on the Content Type that references users. The Node Access User Reference is configured here. Priority is 5.

I have a role setup for all users that will be referenced. That role by default does not have permission to access the node.

When creating/editing a node you can select specific users you'd like to grant access to that node. To allow the node to be viewed by ALL users, I went to the Access Control tab for the node and checked the appropriate boxes. The Access Control setting effectively ignores the user reference field access settings.

I don't quite understand the workaround but I'm glad there is one.

Couldn't you just block anonymous users from your node some other way?
