In my registration form, I collect names of the participants using a multi-value text field in the registration type. Each participant occupies one slot. Therefore the form should be able to automatically determine the number of slots for this registration from the number of submitted names, instead of the user having to explicitly specify the number. I believe this is a common case.

Such a feature could be cleanly integrated into node_registration, if one could specify a field that is used to determine the number of slots in the node type settings form. The interface could be similar to setting a capacity field, start date field etc.

Absolutely. Make something that I can try/see (doesn't have to be a patch) and I'll let you know if it's something I'd use.

I don't understand the issue completely though... You could very easily add a hook to alter the slots property before saving. The multiple value field will be in the available entity. Or do you want to do this without custom code?
