This looks like a fantastic module for user-created photo galleries. But I'm a complete newbie, and I'm a little confused as to how to setup a gallery as shown in the demonstration. I've got all the necessary modules installed (Image, Upload, Views). Can someone give me a beginner's step-by-step on how to achieve a photo gallery like the one shown in the demonstration?

Title: Great Module » Request: write some documentation on how to setup a node gallery.
Component: Miscellaneous » Documentation
Assigned: Unassigned » kmonty
Status: Active » Postponed

This is a necessary step, but the module is in an alpha version and there are some major bugs that prevent the module from being fully used on a public site. Once the module is in a usable beta version, I'll write up some basic documentation.

kmonty’s picture

Also, commenter #4 in #336662: Any directions on how to create a gallery? has setup some basic instructions that people can temporarily use. Please note the comment #5 on the same page for some corrections

gregp’s picture

I have to say I third this even though it's been postponed. Being an alpha release, feedback is obviously important, but if it's too difficult for some to use without some basic instructions then the feedback won't come and the module won't be as good as it could be.

Presently my 'gallery' consists of several images displayed vertically down the page with a bullet to the left and the caption to the right. It looks exactly like a regular list because that's what it is - it utilises the 'item-list' class. I'm sure there must be a way to turn this into a smooth inline list with captions below but in the absence of instructions I can't find what it is; and I'm loathe to go hacking in order to try to cobble something together.

Any direction on config and setup, however basic, would be most welcome over running blind.

Thanks for what looks to be a very promising module.

I have started working on this.

is it helpful to add some how-to requests? i would like to know:
- how to create sub-galleries (sub-albums)
- how to integrate jupload, swfupload or some other multi-upload app
- how to create galleries (albums) which can handle non-image files
- how to get a fullscreen slideshow going
- how to enable image rotate/ resize/ crop etc on upload
- how to simplify input screens so users can upload to galleries with no unnecessary additional features that confuse them

i'll post back if i find out how to do any of these.

Version: 6.x-1.0-alpha3 » 6.x-2.x-dev
Category: support » task

I'm going to make a screencast as soon as we push out a beta.

nattastic101’s picture

i might as well post an update...
i haven't been able to work out any of these. i'm eagerly awaiting some documentation or tips to come through (with the exception of swfupload which should become core at some stage). not happy...

dbeall’s picture

looks as if everyone is working with .dev version, haven't tried that one yet. I have installed 2 sites with alpha10 and it wasn't that difficult. a little messing with it, but not as puzzling as views..

dbeall’s picture

thinking.. i may be able to write up some text by tomorrow. Have to get some sleep, long day, unless i get second wind.. maybe.
I have views code for import basically ready for the album list page using views table.
edit.. text would be for alpha 10

dbeall’s picture

dbeall’s picture

here is instructions i have so far. I have no idea where it should go or if it's even worth posting.. This is for 6.x-2.0-alpha10.
instructions txt
copy of node_gallery.token.inc patched
copy of views code for gallery list page

Since the last one is a patch, marking as "needs review".

Anyone can contribute to the handbooks and anyone can edit them after that.

Hi Dave,

node_gallery_intructions_6.x-2.0alpha10.txt definitely helped me getting around some issues I experienced. Thanks for this guide.

sin

dbeall’s picture

@sin.star, thank you. I was half asleep when i did that. I am working it over and it's much better, still working on it. To get things better organized, i sorted it out in a blog post on my site and I am adding more info to it. I would like to help on a handbook page, just not even sure how to get started. maybe I could hand it to a good handbooker(is that a new word?) to help get it put up. There is a lot of things that are kind of connected with it and i need help with a coupe of views arguments for the thumbnail page..

nancydru’s picture

Well, I don't know how good a "handbooker" I am, but I am the 2nd highest contributor.

dbeall’s picture

well, i started reading the handbookers' information on conforming and formatting... lol, how do you spell out a lot of details with no words... hmmm, where 'that' guy learn english?..

nancydru’s picture

@dbeall: I suggest a look at http://drupal.org/node/273907 for what I think is a fairly well documented module (but then I wrote it).

dbeall’s picture

@NancyDru, thank you very much. I was just thinking I need to find a good one to digest.

dbeall’s picture

I am still sorting things out and adding details before I get head first into a handbook page.. view the page as I am working on it here..
http://www.davebeall.com/weblog/dave/add-photo-gallery-projectnodegallery
My intention is not to direct people to my test site. I will correct this link when I get to the handbook, but some users might need some additional info before I get there. comments and help are welcome as always.

nancydru’s picture

Leave the link. The issue will go "closed" two weeks after it's fixed and in the mean time you get some search engine juice.

dbeall’s picture

it just hit me.. duuu, that patch in #12 was posted by someone else and is now included in the .dev release. I just included it at the time in case someone didn't have it or was having issues with path auto and token. I know it drove me nuts when i first had the issue. sorry, didn't mean to mess up this thread, just trying to help..

dbeall’s picture

well, I am still working on getting an acceptable handbook page(s) ready. Currently rewriting to handbook format and it includes the new features in the 6.x-2.x-dev release. The book can be viewed here until it's ready for posting. ( http://davebeall.com/node-gallery-handbook ) Sorry about the delay.
This is such a cool module!

nancydru’s picture

Looking good.

kmonty’s picture

I agree, this is definitely a good start. When you feel it is ready, definitely make some handbook pages on d.org so other people can help out and edit them

dbeall’s picture

Have to work today,, My plan is to get things a little more in order(details and loose ends) tonight and start posting as soon as I get one last review and edit done. Should be something up Saturday sometime. I figure it will be a good starting point. Since the module is fairly new, the HowTo style of walk through will help avoid extra support requests.. I need to get it up, so I can play with the module some more myself.
You guys have done a really good thing here! I have been searching for a good gallery solution for a year.
Thank You!

dbeall’s picture

well, I messed up,figures. That's what I get for putting content on a site other than my own.
Can anyone tell me how to move a book page to the right place?
Here is where it is now http://drupal.org/node/544050
But it should be here http://drupal.org/node/206776

dbeall’s picture

I filed a support request to documentation issues to get my mistake moved.

nancydru’s picture

I moved it for you. (Hint: Book outline)

dbeall’s picture

Thank you NancyDru, for saving my (dumb a_ _). Sometimes I do some really stupid things.
But sometimes I do some really smart things too. I choose to be a Drupaler!, rather than some of those other ones.
sorry about being such a noob. I should have thought to double check before saving the first time. u know, head first, brain last.

dbeall’s picture

I must be missing something. On my sites, all content is done with create content and arranging items is very easy.
Here on Drupal.org, The first time, I used create content to make a book page, it ended up in the wrong place.
NancyDru moved my misguided book page to the proper place. All is good (had all the relative links were wrong, missed the leading /, corrected.)
I am afraid to use create content again due to no control over it, as happened the first time.

My new question is: how to get the additional child pages to show as a book. They line up in order as they should and the parent page is correct. But how do I get them them to show as a list under the parent book page. This is suppose to be easy, I thought... Is there some handbook for using this site?

dbeall’s picture

It just hit me.. duuu, all pages have to added as a child page using the first page as an entry point. Took me a while for that to sink in.. Have only made 2 books in the last year on my sites, but didn't do either one that way(using the add child page link). I do know this, once I finally learn something, you can't take it away.
Maybe NancyDru would be a real good sport and move the 2 pages to the parent. (or) set me up for documentation team, if they need people to help. Since I am most certainly not a PHP wizard, maybe I can with Drupal help in that way.

dbeall’s picture

I suppose the adding the page that needs moved would be good ( http://drupal.org/node/544530 ). And where it should go ( http://drupal.org/node/544050 ). The weight is set. Should be 2nd child after
1.Main page
2.HowTo: Install Node Gallery
3.HowTo: Create & Edit a Gallery
4.HowTo: Configure Node Gallery
5.HowTo: Add a Gallery Relationship

@Kmonty, maybe add a link to project page.
To all interested people.
Here is the New Handbook Page ( http://drupal.org/node/544050 )
Please read and edit as needed, or (yell) at me to fix it.
Thanks to all ! Drupal Rocks !

nancydru’s picture

Moved the pages.

Go to http://drupal.org/project/issues/documentation and post a request to join the Docs team. You might mention that your current docs require the use of the book outline and that you would also like to get the enhanced input formatting that is available.

nancydru’s picture

BTW, with 7 pages already, you are way up the list of contributors.

Tally’s picture

Good job, dbeall. I particularly like the way you captured info from the issue threads.

Now we need a Read Documentation link at the bottom of the module page. :)

dbeall’s picture

Thank you NancyDru for saving me yet again, ur wonderful!
@Tally, Thanks for the support, I will be watching issues and adding more to it.
For the people that have spotted small errors, yep, I know and have a short list to clean up.
For the people that are thinking there could be a few more details, I agree and will have that in mind. I am as picky as the best of them. details, details and there is always more, Drupal. But don't let that stop you from using the (Edit) tab.lol
This is a great module and deserves some good press or recommending around the community, It should prove to be very popular, almost as good as (project/weblinks)..lol

nancydru’s picture

Oh, yes, now you're going to suck up to me... ;-) Dinner would be nice...

A.W.E.S.O.M.E.

I have linked to the documentation on the project page so I am going to mark this as fixed for now.

Thanks again!

dbeall’s picture

@Kmonty, Thank you, I like being able to help in some way. -go ahead and mark it, but to me it will be open and keeping an eye on things as the module progresses.. just so you know. You guys have your work to do, it will get a lot users over time. u know that.
I am wondering how to help get the word out. As I said, I have been searching for a gallery solution for a year and just found this 2 or 3 weeks ago. I tried lots of stuff, almost went to gallery2, waitin on gallery3- but that's not Drupal.

dddave’s picture

AWESOME indeed!

Very fine job dbeall. Saved me from doing much of it which would never have been nearly as good as your stuff!

dbeall’s picture

Thanks dddave, you have been busy helping people and testing things.. I like helping too.. I realize now, why all that didn't go in the readme text as we were talking about the advanced help module.

dbeall’s picture

@Kmonty -keeping you up to date:
1. added some more items from issue que to FAQ page.
2. added feature to main page about upload limitation setting for User Roles.
3. Updated configuration pages with a note about User Role upload settings.
(BuckeyeLake.org has 10 User Roles, just found out about that feature this morning)

4. added this to top of FAQ page:

Developers' note: The 6.x-2.x-alpha10 release is working well in it's current form. 6.x-2.x is a complete re-write and has only been in development for 3 months. Many issues that are present now are being worked on as we prepare a beta release. All worthwhile projects do take some time, and we are making good progress.

.....that's all for now...
