Nitobe will be refactored to be a sub-them of the NineSixty ( http://drupal.org/project/ninesixty ) theme.

Parts of NineSixty will be incorporated in the 6.x-4.x branch, but will not be a sub-theme.

I'm a great fan of Nitobe, thinking it is maybe the best starter theme out there.

Why were you thinking to refactor it as Zen subtheme and why did you give up on that idea?

I was not thinking of making it a Zen subtheme, but rather a subtheme of the NineSixty theme.

I decided against it because I thought it would cause confusion with users who were already using Nitobe, many of whom have used Nitobe as a base for their own subthemes. Instead, I incorporated the features Nitobe needed from NineSixty.
